Gasoline and diesel prices remained static across the country on Sunday, November 7, 2021 after the government reduced the excise tax on fuel to bring down tariffs at all times. The state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) have not increased the prices of petrol and diesel after taxes levied on fuel by the Center and some states on Diwali were reduced. After lowering excise duty rates, at least 23 states and Union territories also announced a reduction in VAT rates on petrol and diesel, which gave a huge relief to consumers.

According to Indian Oil Corporation, the country’s largest fuel retailer, in the national capital, petrol sells at Rs 103.97 per liter and diesel is available at Rs 86.67 per liter. The petrol price stands at Rs 109.98 in Mumbai and diesel costs Rs 94.14 per liter. Gasoline and diesel prices are the highest in India’s financial hub, Mumbai, among all four metro cities.

Petrol Price in India Today
In Tamil Nadu’s capital, Chennai, petrol is available at Rs 101.40 per liter and people have to pay Rs 91.43 for one liter of diesel. Similarly, the prices of petrol and diesel in Kolkata remained unchanged at Rs 104.67 and Rs 89.79 per liter respectively.
The cost of petrol is the lowest in Chennai among all four metros and the government of Delhi has not yet announced a VAT cut on fuel tariffs.

The government has reduced excise duties on petrol and diesel
On the eve of Diwali, the central government reduced excise duties on petrol and diesel prices by Rs 5 and Rs 10, which brought relief to customers who were suffering from inflation and skyrocketing fuel prices. After this, at least 22 states and UTs cut VAT in different proportions.
The petrol price was reduced from Rs 5.7 to Rs 6.35 per liter on 4 November and diesel prices by Rs 11.16 to Rs 12.88 across the country. The BJP governing states have reduced VAT rates on petrol and diesel by Rs 8 and 9, respectively.

Most reduction in gasoline prices in these states
The largest reductions in gasoline prices were in Ladakh, Karnataka and Puducherry, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. In Ladakh, Karnataka and Puducherry, petrol prices fell by Rs 13.43, Rs 13.55 and Rs 12.85 respectively, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, states and UTs like Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Rajasthan have not undertaken any reduction in VAT on petrol and diesel.
Fuel prices are reviewed by OMCs such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum based on international prices in the previous 15 days and foreign stock exchanges. The prices of petrol and diesel vary from state to state and also in cities, depending on the occurrence of local taxes such as value added tax (VAT) and freight costs.
