Virgil Abloh was born on September 30, 1980 to Nee and Eunice Abloh, Ghanaian immigrants. He was born outside Chicago in Rockford, Illinois. He did not study fashion, but received civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He learned the basics of fashion from his mother, “a needlewoman,” in an obituary in The New York Times.

Abloh, who was born to Ghanaian parents in 1980, grew up on the outskirts of Chicago. He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002 and went on to study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

After working for an architecture firm for two years, Abloh shifted his focus to fashion. In 2009, he founded RSVP Gallery, an art gallery and menswear boutique in Chicago.
